GARDENVILLE MARCH 1 WATERCOLOR PENCILS

Next Tuesday (2:30 - 5) is Intro to Watercolor Pencils. If you like the look of watercolors, but are anxious about brushwork, this is a great way to have more control. Draw and then wet some or all areas with clear water. Amazing results! We will use DerWent Watercolor Pencils Set of 24 so everyone is working with the same colors.

GYOTAKU at GARDENVILLE

Our first art class at the newly restored Gardenville Schoolhouse: Gyotaku (fish rubbing). What fun!

Working as a team:

Linda Cuppett wants to frame hers for her guest room. She kept saying, "I can't believe I'm playing with a dead fish!" But she said it wasn't icky at all.

Kathy Wallin went with the sheepshead's natural colors. She did two for a set of pillows. She said she was there to have fun. And did she ever!

Pam Knowles did two for pillows also.
She made teal dominant in one and used it as an accent in another. Do you think she was pleased? You betcha.

Our fourth participant had a family emergency, but I'm sure she will be at a future class. Missed you, Vesta!

Teaching Art Classes at Gardenville

will soon be teaching art classes for adults and seniors at the new Gardenville Culture Center. If you haven't heard about the fantastic renovation of the old Gardenville School, here is a link to Penny Fletcher's newspaper article:

My info for a flyer I am presently creating:

Grace McKee is the art instructor for adult and senior art classes here at the new Gardenville Culture Center. She gets great enjoyment from sharing her love for and knowledge of art, imparting specific tips and techniques.

Grace believes that creativity is uplifting and therapeutic. Her art students will tell you that she is a supportive, organized instructor who truly enjoys helping you move forward in your artistic pursuits.

Grace serves as Art Specialist at MiraBay and teaches acrylics, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, watercolor, and watercolor pencils to individual adults and small groups. She leads gyotaku (fish rubbing) workshops for larger groups, recently at the Trunk Show Boutique and MiraBay Clubhouse and soon at the Valencia Lakes Clubhouse.

Grace has studied watercolor with Jo Tarabula, AWS, acrylics with Joanna Coke, MFA, and gyotaku with Japanese Master Gyotaku Artist Mineo Yamamoto.

A retired teacher, she has taught business technology education, including computer graphics, at Erwin Technical Center and at East Bay and Jefferson High Schools where she served as BTE Department Head. She has also taught at the University of South Florida and Hillsborough and Pasco-Hernando Community Colleges. And she taught at Qingdao International School in Qingdao, China.

A longtime resident and active community member of SouthShore, Grace is a past president of both Apollo Beach and GFWC Ruskin Woman's Clubs and a charter member of Riverview Woman's Club. She is a former Honorary Mayor of Apollo Beach and has served on the Board of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce.

Castle Step-by-Step Painting Instructions

Step-by-step instructions for this castle painting:

Photo 1:
1. With pencil draw LIGHTLY around the painting area to fit inside a standard mat. (I have drawn rather darkly so you can see it.)
2. With pencil again, draw your horizon line LIGHTLY.
NEVER IN THE MIDDLE!
Ask yourself, "Is my painting to be mostly sky or mostly ground/water?"
3. Sketch lightly your structure. No need for great detail. It is far away. In this case I have selected to emulate Highclere Castle of Downton Abbey fame.
4. Fill it in with Art Masking Fluid to save the white.
It comes in yellow or clear; I have used yellow so you can see it.
5. Use hair dryer.

Photo 2:
1. Put peas of paint on your palette:
Blue
Yellow
Sienna
2. Wet the sky area. Paint wet-into-wet with a yellow wash. Quickly add blue paint and darker blue made by adding sienna to your blue.
DON'T OVERWORK!
3. Lift out a few clouds with paper towel or tissue.
4. Use hair dryer.

Photo 3:
1. Wet the foreground.
2. Cover with light green thicker than a wash.
3. Mix a couple more greens.
Add a few swishes of darker green into the wet ground.
4. Tap around the castle to make trees and bushes. While the ground was wet-into-wet, this will be wet on dry.
5. Using a toothbrush or fan brush, pick up some yellow paint. Flick it onto the green at the lower right. Flowers!
6. Add a big bush or tree in the bottom left to aid with perspective.
7. Rub off the Art Masking Fluid revealing the white paper.

Photo 4:
1.  Add a blue and sienna wash over the white castle.
2. With a rigger, add a door, a few windows, and a couple of darker sides.
4. NOW  FOR THE MOST DIFFICULT STEP:  WALK AWAY!
5. Once everything is dry and you can see with "new eyes," make final adjustments.
